The Low Down: Explore the Mackenzie & Otago Backcountry

Discover the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand’s South Island on this unique landscape photography workshop. You’ll have the opportunity to capture dramatic vistas, golden hour light, and iconic locations, including Queenstown’s alpine beauty, the tranquil lakes and rugged valleys of the Mackenzie Region, and the historic sites and rolling hills of Otago’s backcountry.

Throughout the journey, you’ll photograph the stunning Southern Alps, turquoise rivers, and glacial lakes, while chasing perfect light at famous spots like Lake Wanaka and the iconic Wanaka Tree. Our adventure will also take us deep into Otago’s remote backcountry, where expansive landscapes provide a striking contrast to the jagged peaks of the Southern Alps.

This workshop also offers exciting opportunities for astrophotography, with the timing planned around the new moon for the best chance to capture the night sky. The naturally dark skies along New Zealand’s West Coast, including areas within the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, provide ideal conditions for stargazing. While clear skies can’t be guaranteed, we’ll make the most of the conditions as best we can.

With access to some of New Zealand’s most photogenic and off-the-beaten-path locations, expect scenic drives, hands-on photography sessions, and plenty of opportunities to refine your skills while photographing some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on Earth.
